I am the third born in my family. We are seven children, six girls and one boy. Life was not that easy as we have faced so many challenges. My mother being beaten up by my father, who drunk to his fill and denied us the fatherly love because he left us with so much poverty and misery. My mother couldn’t stand it any more of the stress, thus, she got married again to this man who had separated with his wife.
Even though I didn’t like what my father used to do to us, I didn’t like the idea that another man will be with us. I was in class seven at that time. Months pass by, the man showed love to us and our mother slowly gaining our trust. Little did we know, our mother got pregnant again, and at that time my elder sister was finishing form four. One of my sisters and I were finishing our KCPE, and on the release of the results, we performed quite well.
My eldest sister went to Nairobi to search for greener pastures. I did not get as lucky as my other sister who earned a scholarship by Equity Bank as she had performed fairly better than me. When we were in form three, our ste-father started to occassionally miss returning home. Life started being relatively unbearable, and one of my sisters dropped out of school and became a housegirl. My mother and I could once in a while run errands, mostly manual work, to earn some pennies.
Life was prooving too cruel for my mother as she started to loose weight. We later on came to find out that she was expecting another baby. As if that was not enough of a stressing factor, she had contracted HIV/AIDS from our step-father who had been cheating on our mother with other women. Many a times we wonderes why we had to live such a life. I dropped out of school when I was joining form four, to help support the family as my mother had grown too weary to carry out heavy chores.
By chance, I was approached by a philanthropic lady in our church. She was interested in the well-being of our family. She helped me go back to school and I am hopeful I will finish my studies with good grades, that’ll see me get a well paying job that will see my other siblings not undergo such traumers of life.
